Los Angeles Convening
Dec 2023
Why We Gathered
Collectrify has been convening a No False Solutions (NFS) Work Group for over a year to identify and push back against the threat that fossil fuel-based “climate solutions” (CCUS, hydrogen, market-based schemes, etc.) pose to what Collectrify identifies as the real solution, which is centering people and equity in the removal of fossil fuels from buildings and communities. Rather than investing in unproven fossil fuel infrastructure under the guise of climate solutions, we are naming energy efficiency, weatherization, renewables with battery storage, and the removal of fossil fuels from homes and communities through equitable building electrification as the solutions that merit massive investment. As we advocate for these health-protective and equitable policies, it is also important to ensure that critical time, energy, and resources are not being instead directed toward technologies that further entrench the fossil fuel industry or create other climate and environmental justice problems.
Impacts on Environmental Justice and Fenceline Communities: We witnessed firsthand the compounding environmental, climate justice, and public health crises and the impact that these new fossil fuel infrastructure investments will have on already overburdened communities with our partners in Los Angeles during our Learning Community Collaboratory meeting in December 2023, where an anticipated hydrogen hub and related new fossil fuel infrastructure will be built.
Invest in Climate Solutions: Rather than investing in unproven fossil fuel infrastructure under the guise of climate solutions, energy efficiency, weatherization, renewables with battery storage, and the removal of fossil fuels from homes and communities through equitable building electrification are the solutions that merit massive investment.
