Virtual Power Plants and Opportunities for Frontline Communities

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), aggregations of hundreds and thousands of smaller resources like rooftop solar, battery storage, smart thermostats, and controllable water heaters, are increasingly popping up across the country. But what are VPPs, why are they suddenly so popular, and how can they be leveraged to benefit communities?

This session is designed to answer these questions. First by explaining the basics of what a VPP is and why states, utilities, companies, and communities are increasingly exploring VPPs as a way to meet growing energy demand and then digging into examples of how VPPs are being designed today and how they could be improved to better serve frontline communities, with a deep dive into a new community-led VPP program in New Orleans.
